Fiorentina Double-Up on AZ
Despite missing several key players, Fiorentina managed to obtain an impressive 2-0 victory in Holland against AZ Alkmaar in a pre-season friendly.
Giampaolo Pazzini's brace was more than enough to see Fiorentina defeat AZ Alkmaar 2-0 as La Viola continue their preparations for the second leg of the Champions League preliminary round against Slavia Prague.
Cesare Prandelli stuck with Fiorentina's usual 4-3-3 formation, despite the absences of Adrian Mutu and Alberto Gilardino. Per Koldrup started in central defence for the injured Alessandro Gamberini, while Sergio Almiron was given the task of directing the midfield play. Up front, the trident consisted of Franco Semioli, Giampaolo Pazzini and Daniel Pablo Osvaldo.
Fiorentina started the brighter of the two and were rewarded with an early goal. Pazzini nodded in a perfect cross from the wing by Semioli to give I Gigliati a deserved lead on 23 minutes. However, their Dutch counterparts responded well to the goal, forcing recently Internationally-retired French goalkeeper Sebastien Frey into a couple of fine saves, first from Ari Da Silva, followed by Demy De Zeuuw's effort.
But Fiorentina managed to hang on to the slim advantage and right before the end of the match, Pazzini finished off the contest with a wonderful volley to make it 2-0 with only four minutes remaining.
After the match, coach Prandelli praised his team's performance: "We did good things tonight and it is important to test yourself on the international stage.
“Osvaldo worked hard for the team and played very well, while Pazzini is in great shape and I’m happy to be faced with tough choices every week.”
The Fiorentina fans will also certainly be pleased with their side, as the absences of three starters did not seem to affect their play at all ahead of the Champions League qualifier with Slavia Prague and the Serie A opener against Juventus.
