<>Riccardo Montolivo’s late strike secured Italy’s spot in the European Under-21 Championship play-offs after a 1-0 win over Austria.</P>
<>Newcastle United starlet Giuseppe Rossi was given his first start for his country, as they switched to the 4-3-3 system in the wake of Giampaolo Pazzini’s injury and the suspension for Antonio Nocerino.</P>
<P>All the Azzurrini required from this match was a point to reach the play-offs for the European Championships following their 1-0 victory in Iceland on Friday, but it was Austria who had the first real chance with Thonhofer inspiring a good move before Kienast under-hit his lob over the goalkeeper.</P>
<P>Italy went far closer soon after, as Pelle’s header from an Alessandro Rosina cross was tipped over the bar. From the resulting corner, Riccardo Montolivo’s fierce effort on the bounce was pushed wide.</P>
<P>Alberto Aquilani duetted with the impressive Torino midfielder Rosina for the Roma man to curl off target, but goalkeeper Gianluca Curci miss-timed his run to clear from Harnik and the Austrian fired wide of the open goal.</P>
<P>The home side made a similar mistake on the half-hour mark, as Aquilani tried to set up Rosina rather than shoot when faced with Almer. </P>
<P>After the break, new Napoli signing Garics sparked a fine team move for Austria, although Thonhofer couldn’t quite finish it off. Premiership representative Rossi was bright and eager, but too often his finishing was weak and he made way for Atalanta’s Andrea Lazzari.</P>
<P>The substitute ran on to a Rosina counter-attack and fell in the area when the goalkeeper plucked the ball off his foot. </P>
<P>The Azzurrini finally broke through seven minutes from time with the same player who had scored the winner in Iceland last week. Lazzari touched back for Fiorentina midfielder Montolivo to drill low into the far corner of the net.</P>
<P>It could've been a more generous scoreline, with a great save on Nicola Pozzi's strike, a Giorgio Chiellini header over and Lazzari's stoppage-time penalty appeals.</P>
<P>Italy top Group Five with a maximum six points, leaving Austria and Iceland with just one each, and enter Friday’s draw for the European Under-21 Championship play-offs.</P>
