Mutu: I didn't notice injury
Fiorentina ace Adrian Mutu has relived the elbow injury that looks set to rule him out of the start of the season.
After rejecting an £18m bid from Roma this summer, the Viola expected to have Mutu at their disposal for their Serie A opener against Juventus.
But disaster struck when Mutu fell awkwardly while training with Romania's national side preparing for tonight's friendly against Latvia.
“I injured myself without realising it,” the former Chelsea man explained to Sports.Ro.
“In fact I continued to train as if nothing had happened and then the pain suddenly hit me.
“This kind of thing is part and parcel of the life of a professional footballer. I have dislocated my elbow and now I have a cast.”
Mutu will miss Fiorentina's Champions League preliminary second leg against Slavia Prague but could return for August 31's grudge match against Juventus.
Toni plans Serie A swansong
Luca Toni insists that life in Munich is “perfect”, but he intends to finish his career in Italy.
The giant Azzurri hitman left Fiorentina for Bayern Munich last summer and instantly made his mark in Germany where he was top scorer.
Although he is excelling in the Bundesliga, Toni has always been determined to return home at some point.
“I have scored 99 Serie A goals and I'd like to get to 100,” the 31-year-old told Zeit. “But there's lots of time because I have another five or six years to play.”
“When I started this new adventure I thought that living everywhere was pretty much the same.
“But that isn't the case. In Munich everything is really perfect - clean, orderly and safe. I wish people were as safe in my hometown of Modena.”
Toni concluded by discussing his attempts to understand the German language.
“Am I fluent? Not at all,” he laughed. “After training I am tired and I have engagements for the sponsors and travelling to do rather than learning the language.
“To learn you need more than just time, you need to be in the right mindset and it just isn't a priority. However, I understand perfectly when people insult me in the stadium.”
Toni sat out Bayern's first game of the season against Hamburg with a calf injury, but he is back in action ahead of Saturday's game against Borussia Dortmund.

Most people would agree that it’s going to be pretty hard for Fiorentina to top their 2007-08 campaign. The Viola, under the tutelage of Cesare Prandelli, finally achieved what they’d been threatening to do ever since the tactician took the reins in 2005 – qualify for the Champions League. Surely that’s as far as this young, yet immensely talented, squad can go…right? Wrong.
By bringing in the out of sorts Alberto Gilardino from Milan for £12m and rejecting Roma’s advances for star man Adrian Mutu, many might think that sporting director Pantaleo Corvino has blundered. After all, Gila couldn’t hit a cow’s backside with a banjo for much of his San Siro stint, while some would argue against the wisdom of keeping the Romanian striker when he clearly wanted to head for the Eternal City and a huge transfer fee was on the table.
But Corvino knows that, in Prandelli, he is working alongside one of the top man managers in the Italian game. Let us not forget that it was the much-loved tactician who got the best out of the duo when he was in charge at Parma. A few disappointing, yet not as hugely disastrous as the Press portrayed, campaigns for Gila at Milan won’t stop Prandelli convincing him that he is still one of the best finishers in the Italian game. There’s a YouTube video or two out there which will probably be played on loop until the season is ready to kick-off to add conviction to his words.
And although Mutu will have been disappointed not to be wearing Giallorosso this term, he’s overcome bigger disappointments in his career so far. As he proved by almost immediately signing a new contract that was put on the table, he’s not one to dwell on the past.
Mutu also happens to be the ideal strike partner for Gila. He’s not always the most selfless when in possession – Christian Vieri will testify to that – but the former Chelsea man never lets defenders rest and is always willing to drop deep to receive the ball. Then, when he gets it, he will drive straight at the opposition, which will inevitably create space for whoever is fortunate enough to be partnering him up front.
So while many might favour the Amauri-Alex Del Piero pairing at Juventus, Milan’s Ka-Pa-Ro trident or Inter’s Adriano and Zlatan Ibrahimovic battering ram, my money is on Mutu and Gila to be the top strike partnership in Serie A this season – which means that the sky is the limit for Fiorentina.
