With David Rozehnal close to joining Hamburg, Lazio are in the market for a new centre-back and have turned their attention to Diego Lugano.
Rozehnal missed yesterday's friendly against Spal and reportedly flew to Germany for talks.
“We are in contact with Lazio and the player, but there are still some things to clarify,” Jorn Wolf, a Hamburg spokesman, said.
Lazio want £5m for the Czech international, but Hamburg are currently only prepared to pay £4m.
The money Lazio cash in any deal for Rozehnal will be used to try and tempt Lugano to join the club.
The 28-year-old Uruguay international is out of contract at Fenerbahçe and looking for a new challenge.
According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Lugano would settle for a contract worth between £1.5m and £2m a season.
Meanwhile, Guglielmo Stendardo and Emílson Cribari are on their way out of the club. The latter is attracting interest from Palermo.
Given both players are defenders, Lazio are keen to ensure they are not short of numbers at the back next season, so scouts have been sent to Sweden to check on the progress of Rasmus Bengtsson, the highly rated 23-year-old Trelleborg centre-back.
