Fiorentina are looking to heavily reinforce their defence once the summer transfer window opens in July.
The Viola, who face Rangers in the UEFA Cup semi-finals on Thursday, want to build a team capable of challenging for the Scudetto from the back.
The club's sporting director and transfer guru Pantaleo Corvino [pictured] has been in South America scouting goalkeepers Diego Cavalieri and Fabio despite the excellent form of Sebastien Frey.
The French international's agent, Giovanni Branchini, yesterday revealed that his client was at issue with the Tuscan outfit's search for another 'keeper.
However the Italian Press has today reported that Corvino's mission proved unsuccessful and he is now turning his attention to Livorno's Italian international Marco Amelia.
The Gigliati will almost certainly have a new-look defence come August, with Torino captain Gianluca Comotto, Felipe of Udinese and Palermo skipper Andrea Barzagli all being lined up.
Barzagli is the Viola's No 1 priority and talks are reported to have already begun between Corvino and Rosanero President Maurizio Zamparini.
The 26-year-old World Cup winner is believed to be available for around £7m as the Sicilian club plan a rebuild of their own after a disappointing 2007-08.
Another player on Coach Cesare Prandelli's wish list is Adriano, the troubled Inter striker currently impressing on loan with Sao Paulo in Brazil.
L'Imperatore has recently rediscovered his scoring touch, hitting the back of the net 14 times in 24 appearances for the Paulista.
Prandelli famously coached the 26-year-old while at Parma, fielding him alongside current Fiorentina star Adrian Mutu to devastating effect.
